This segment of the North Country Trail offers a truly outstanding snowshoe hike. It is located in the Marengo Semi-Primitive Area and can be traversed in either direction as a point-to-point hike or out and back. There are several good climbs, but overall the terrain is moderately difficult. Three overlooks of the Marengo River Valley offer excellent views of the surrounding countryside.

The Marengo Overlook consists of northern mesic hardwood forest and is home to thrushes, vireos, warblers, woodpeckers, flycatchers, and woodland raptors.
