After retiring early due to a work-related accident, David Butler (1898–1997) began to fill his yard with all manner of wildly imaginative and kinetic sculptures using basic materials and tools. Leslie Umberger, curator of folk and self-taught art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, collaborated in this exhibition of Butler’s work, drawing comparisons between his art environment and the improvisational quilts made by African American women across the South.
