Historic Janesville Walking Tours

Janesville

Join the Rock County Historical Society and local historian Rich Fletcher for the 2017 Janesville Historic Walking Tours. Each tour is designed to showcase the unique personality and stories from Janesville’s distinct neighborhoods and downtown. Enjoy a 60-minute guided tour, learning about the people, places and heritage of each neighborhood. Tours will be held in different neighborhoods on the second Saturday of each month from May through September. Begin with Main Street and explore 180 years of progress and commerce in an ever-evolving streetscape. The Look West tour explores the neighborhood around the Lincoln-Tallman House and highlights recent preservation and renovation in one of Janesville’s oldest neighborhoods. The West Milwaukee St and 4th Ward tour begins in Corn Exchange Park which contains several monuments commemorating war veterans, including the Doughboy statue representing the 100th anniversary of US involvement in World War I. The tour continues to explore the churches and residences of the Historic 4th Ward and explores the ethnic and economic diversity this neighborhood has had since its earliest days. Explore the “pocket neighborhood” of Columbus Circle, which represented a new way of life for a mobile middle class in the first half of the 20th century. The homes here are more modest and whimsical in architectural style, built largely in the 1920s. Finally, visit Court House Hill which has always been the prestige address for the upscale residents of Janesville. You will see a range of Victorian homes built from the 1850s to the 1920s. This is a neighborhood that takes pride in historic preservation and has a great sense of community.
