Trail Description

The Badger State Trail travels 40 miles between Madison and the Wisconsin-Illinois border while traversing farmlands, woods, rolling hills, scenic meadows, remnant prairies, ravines, glacial topography and several small communities. The Badger State Trail also connects to many local parks and the Capital City and Sugar River state trails. DNR Property Manager, Badger and Sugar River Trails Stewart Tunnel Update: 2025: Surveying and boring will occur this spring, with engineering and construction plan development 2026: Construction tentatively planned to begin 2027: Finish construction and open trail *Dates and schedule subject to change

Condition Description

Stewart Tunnel on the Badger Trail is closed due to safety concerns. Trail users can use Tunnel Road to detour around the closure. See the Location Photos below for a map of the detour.
