Aldo Leopold Foundation

The Aldo Leopold Shack and Farm is the landscape that inspired Leopold's "A Sand County Almanac" and is now a National Historic Landmark.
Built in 2007, the Leopold Center was the first building to be certified as "carbon neutral" in the United States.
The building serves as headquarters for the Aldo Leopold Foundation, a visitor center, and a meeting facility.

Green Innovations

  • Newly constructed Legacy Center meets the highest standards (Platinum certification) of the U.S. Green Building Council
  • Solar, geothermal and wood heat produce more energy than the building consumes, creating a "net-zero" energy budget
  • Ongoing restoration projects rehabilitate the Leopold Memorial Reserve
  • Workshops, programs, and seminars help to educate the public and provide resources to landowners
  • Waterless urinals, dual-flush toilets, and rain gardens help to conserve and manage water use
