Cave of the Mounds – Blue Mounds
Managing Editor Jeniece Smith suggests this National Natural Landmark for its variety and accessibility. The Cave of the Mounds in Blue Mounds, uncovered by accident in a 1939 mining blast, is called the “jewel box” of America’s show caves for its diverse array of crystal formations. You’re free to photograph your surroundings along the lighted walkways and take family snapshots, a splendid departure from the standard for most show caves. Don’t miss the six-foot cephalopod fossil across the ceiling! For an extra fee, you can upgrade your tickets to yearlong “Keys to the Cave.”
