Emma Carlin Trail
This sister system to the John Muir Trail is a bit more out-of-the-way and less heavily used. Recent efforts to harden the surface have made it easier to ride too. All three loops have difficult sections. The west end of the Green Loop has a particularly tough uphill grind. If you like, you can take the difficult Connector Trail south to the John Muir Trail. If you ride every loop in both systems and the connector, you will cover nearly 40 miles - and deserve a medal. Nearby, the village of Palmyra welcomes bicyclists at its taverns, stores and cafes; great places to swap stories about your ride. The trail is open to hikers and snowshoes in the winter. A state park vehicle sticker is required. Anyone 16 years and older riding a mountain bike, cross country skiing will require a state trail pass as well.
