Madeline Island, historically the spiritual home of the Ojibwe people, became an important fur-trading center for the French in the 17th century. Over the next 300 years the island saw the arrival of missionaries, loggers, fishermen, boat builders, miners and - by the early 20th century - summer tourists. The log museum building and the Capser Center exhibit hall capture the island's long and colorful history.
