Smith Rapids Saddle Trail

Much of this 16-mile equestrian trail follows along the banks of the South Fork of the Flambeau River, which offers open vistas and opportunities to view wildlife. The trail is peaceful, relatively flat, and meanders through several different forest types, including pine plantations. There is parking with trail access near the Smith Rapids Picnic Area which is located near the half-way point on the Smith Rapids Saddle Trail and offers a day-use area including drinking water, vault toilets, a picnic table, grill, river & stream fishing, and carry-in boat access. It is located near the Smith Rapids Covered Bridge, one of only two covered bridges in Wisconsin. The unique town lattice style bridge spans 90 feet over the South Fork of the Flambeau River. The nearby Smith Rapids Campground is anticipated to open for the 2019 season. Dispersed camping is permitted in the Forest; call for more information regarding camping.  There is also trail access on the east end of the trail at the boat landing on Round Lake. The very west end of the saddle trail is temporarily not accessible due to the instability of the Riley Creek Bridge.
