About Gaylord Nelson Wilderness
Gaylord Nelson Wilderness is a 33,500-acre wilderness area located in Wisconsin's Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. It is one of the largest wilderness areas in Wisconsin, and it is named in honor of Gaylord Nelson, the late former Governor and U.S. Senator. The area is characterized by hardwood and boreal forests, steep cliffs, rock bridges, sea caves, and unique beach formations. It is home to a variety of animals including black bears, waterfowl, snowshoe hares, red foxes, coyotes, and otters.
