6 Stops for Unforgettable Wisconsin Breakfasts

Share

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so naturally, we take it seriously here in Wisconsin. And by seriously, we mean deliciously and surrounded by good company. Whether you’re an early riser, a bruncher or a breakfast-for-dinner kind of person, we have many stop-worthy breakfasts throughout the state.

Frank’s Diner – Kenosha

Frank’s has been voted the Best Diner in Kenosha County, and it’s been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and The Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Beyond the award-winning atmosphere, Frank’s is home to gigantic buttermilk pancakes, fluffy omelets, Garbage Plates (known elsewhere as scramblers or skillets) and breakfast specials every weekend. This is the perfect place to sip on orange juice, enjoy award-winning food and catch up with your favorite people over a memorable breakfast.

Mickies Dairy Bar – Madison

Mickies Dairy Bar is a classic diner that will have your mouth watering as you smell their Scrambler being prepared. The specialty dish consists of three fluffy eggs over their signature chopped hashbrowns, bacon or sausage topped with veggies, cheese and gravy served with toast. It’s a local favorite, and folks line up for it every Saturday, especially when there’s a Badger game happening nearby. But take our word for it — it’s well worth the wait. What’s waiting is a table (or a spot at the counter) with your favorite people at one of the most iconic stops in Madison since 1946.

Short Stack Eatery – Madison

With a motto like “All breakfast. All the time,” it’s safe to assume breakfast at Short Stack is done right. Choose something sweet like a chocolate chip stack, sweet potato oatmeal pancakes and pecan streusel French toast, or go the savory route with Cajun biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash and pulled pork with cheesy grits. And there’s a whole vegan menu for fans of a plant-based breakfast. But our favorite thing to order is The Blind: you’re allowed to ask if it’s savory or sweet, but take the plunge and save $4.50 by being down for the surprise. Whatever it is, we know it won’t disappoint.

The Wooden Chair – Stevens Point

The Wooden Chair is one-of-a-kind because of its large collection of eclectic antique chairs. Be sure to scope out your favorite before you take a seat with friends and family. Beyond the furniture, the restaurant’s famous breakfasts make it a local favorite. Choices like the huevos rancheros omelet, corned beef omelet, Greek omelet, banana walnut pancakes and Belgian waffles make this Stevens Point spot a must-see and must-eat. It’s the perfect place to catch up with your favorite people.

Madison Sourdough - Madison

You’ll find much more than just bread at Madison Sourdough, a local-favorite bakery, flour mill, patisserie and cafe. Co-owner and baker Andrew Hutchison was a 2023 James Beard semifinalist in the category of Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker, so you know everything here will be top-notch.

From inspired breakfast dishes like Croque Madame on croissant bread to vanilla chia pudding and a bakery case filled with almost endless goodies, gathering with your group for a meal here will start your day on the highest note possible. Choose from inside and outside patio seating and take some fresh-baked bread home for later!

Norske Nook – Osseo

At the Norske Nook, traditional Norwegian staples mix with modern American favorites to create unforgettable breakfasts meant to be shared with the people who matter most. Dig into the Lefse Wrap, a Norwegian potato pancake filled with classic breakfast fillings and drizzled in hollandaise sauce. Don’t forget to try a slice of pie in tasty flavors such as apple lingonberry and cherry crunch. Whether you share Norwegian heritage or not, this is a place worth experiencing.

Besides Osseo, you can find the Norske Nook at its other locations in DeForest and Rice Lake.
