Explore Madison’s Capitol Square at These Iconic Events

Share

Madison’s Capitol Square is more than the city’s centerpiece—it’s where unforgettable moments happen year-round. Gather with friends and family to browse colorful markets, enjoy a picnic on the Capitol lawn, celebrate local art and music or cheer on runners crossing the finish line. No matter when you visit, these signature events invite you to experience the energy, creativity and community that make Madison so special.

Dane County Farmers’ Market

One of Madison’s most beloved traditions is the Dane County Farmers’ Market, the largest producer-only farmers’ market in the U.S. Here, you and your crew can wander through vibrant stalls filled with fresh-picked produce, artisan cheeses, fragrant flowers and other local specialties from hundreds of vendors every Saturday morning, mid-April through early November. Pick up some fresh bakery items–think hot, gooey cheese bread and homemade Pop-Tarts filled with Door County cherries–and a locally roasted coffee to enjoy while sitting in the shade together on the picturesque Capitol lawn for a perfect picnic.

Many restaurants near the Capitol Square use ingredients from the market for true farm-to-table cuisine, including Graze, L'Etoile, Heritage Tavern and more. And when winter comes, the market doesn’t stop–it simply moves indoors to Garver Feed Mill.

Concerts on the Square

Summer Wednesdays in Madison are known for another local-favorite event: Concerts on the Square. Thousands of people gather on the Capitol lawn each week for a free concert by the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, often featuring special musical guests or covering well-known pieces from movie soundtracks and popular artists.

Bring your own picnic or order one ahead from local spots such as Fromagination, Canteen and One Social Food Hall, depending on what you’re craving. Join the many locals and visitors alike who gather to relax on blankets and chairs and enjoy an outdoor concert together for a perfect summer evening.

Taste of Madison

You can find a little bit of everything at Taste of Madison, an iconic event that attracts visitors from near and far each Labor Day weekend. From soul food and crepes to egg rolls and empanadas, there’s sure to be something for everyone in your group to enjoy. Stroll the Capitol Square to browse over 90 food vendors serving cuisine from around the world, as well as beverage tents to quench your thirst.

Live musical performances make for a lively vibe throughout the two-day event. You may also see Bernie Brewer and Milwaukee Brewers Famous Racing Sausages and the Forward Marching Band around. With kids’ activities and endless tasty options, this is the perfect end-of-summer event you won’t want to miss.

Madison Marathon

Feel the excitement build as thousands of runners gather beneath the majestic Wisconsin State Capitol, where every Madison Marathon race begins and ends on the iconic Capitol Square. Whether you're tackling the full marathon, half marathon, 10K or 5K, you'll be treated to crisp November air, brilliant late-autumn colors and some of the city's most unforgettable scenery.

The full marathon winds past the sparkling shores of Lakes Monona and Wingra, through the peaceful UW–Madison Arboretum and along Madison's vibrant streets before bringing you back to the cheering crowds downtown. Crossing the finish line on Capitol Square is a moment worth celebrating, with a well-earned medal, post-race treats and the shared joy of accomplishing something extraordinary.
