Explore Wisconsin's Accessible Attractions

Share

I've always been passionate about helping people with physical limitations stay active and live a fulfilling life, taking full advantage of the great outdoors located in our own backyard. I've been to all corners of the state, and from La Crosse to Superior, Eau Claire to Madison, there are spectacular adventures to be had.

One of my favorite places is Door County, and Eagle Tower is one of the area's most famous landmarks. Located in the heart of Peninsula State Park atop Eagle Bluff, the lookout point offers an incredible 360-degree view of the park and the sparkling waters of Green Bay.

If you plan for everybody, everybody can participate. Here in Wisconsin, we take a lot of pride in ensuring that people of all backgrounds and abilities are able to fully enjoy the beauty of our great state. At Eagle Tower, a fully accessible ramp leads all the way up to the overlook. It allows someone like me, who uses a wheelchair, to easily get to the top. The 850-foot ramp never exceeds a 5% slope and contains plenty of flat areas and benches to rest along the way.

The view is amazing. Bring a pair of binoculars to get an up-close view of the park's surrounding islands, Lake Michigan's gorgeous shoreline and the charming lakeside village of Ephraim. I’ve been involved with initiatives to increase access to public spaces throughout the state. With the RampUp Milwaukee project, we installed a ramp and mats to provide access to the water at Bradford Beach. It’s a great feeling to know I’ve helped people I don’t even know experience the beauty of Wisconsin. I extend this invitation to everyone: Come check out Wisconsin. It is something like you’ve never seen.

Friends adaptive sailing on a boat on Lake Michigan

Wisconsin is limitless in its inclusion of people of all abilities. Last summer, I tried adaptive sailing for the first time with SEAS (Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan). I didn't know that the opportunity even existed, but with this excursion, I was able to get out on the water and sail on my own, fully in control of the boat. The experience was so freeing. Opportunities for accessible activities abound year-round, and our beautiful state takes great pride in that. There truly is something for everyone here.
