Finding Growth and Serenity in a Garden Sanctuary

Share

I am an avid gardener. I have never met a native plant I didn't like, always finding a way to shoehorn in one more pollinator-friendly perennial in my gardens. A few years back, as I impatiently awaited the arrival of spring, a friend suggested a winter visit to Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison. I jumped at the chance to leave the cold-weather confines that bedevil gardeners and breathe in some fresh air.

When we arrived, we found our way to the Thai Pavilion and its golden pagoda connected to the main gardens by a stunning arched bridge spanning a creek. The pavilion, a gift from the Thai government, was resplendent in gold leaf and lacquer finish, veritably glowing in the sharp winter sun. We stood in silence, awestruck by the talent of the Thai artisans who built it. I was equally taken by the beauty of the trees serving as backdrop, sculptural without leaves at that moment, yet still spectacular.

I couldn't help but think, if the gardens are this exquisite in the winter, how glorious they must be in the warm embrace of summer. And so I've returned time and again, both alone and with companions, to witness hope fluttering on the wings of endangered Monarch butterflies, to slow down along the birch walk to consider the needs of the planet, to find a quiet nook in the moonlight meadow for meditation, and to once again marvel at the Thai Pavilion now surrounded by lush plants reflected in dark pools. It's here, in the Thai garden, where I've felt the oneness of humanity like no other place. As I experienced on my first visit, guests naturally hush conversation, some allowing themselves an extra moment to be inspired by both Mother Nature and humankind, children asking questions of their parents, looking in awe at what appears as a golden castle before them. It is a shared moment of connection and joy.

The next time you're looking to reset, know that a botanical garden awaits, even in Wisconsin's busiest city centers. Take an "awe walk," alone or with a guide, and shift your attention outward. You'll be rewarded with the certainty of summer's sweet blooms or, perhaps, winter's unexpected reveals.
