Plan a Dog-Friendly Door County Vacation with This Itinerary

Share

Wisconsin’s Door County Peninsula is a great place for dog-friendly vacations. Here, you can bring your pup to the theater, wag tails at a winery, paddle a kayak or lap up some frozen custard together. Many of Door County’s restaurants and hotels believe in puppy love, too, offering special treats for your canine companions.

Work your way up the peninsula by following this inspirational itinerary or create your own for an unforgettable vacation with your furry friend.

Day 1: State Parks & Patios

Start your Door County adventure off right with a cup of coffee from the beloved Door County Coffee & Tea Company just north of Sturgeon Bay. You and your pooch can enjoy the shaded patio and stock up on delicious beans to bring home while fueling up for the fun day ahead.

Next, head to nearby Potawatomi State Park to explore two and a half miles of fresh coast shoreline, lush rolling hills and picturesque limestone cliffs with your pup.

When the two of you get hungry, it’s only a few miles to Waterfront Mary’s in Sturgeon Bay, where you can join in on a classic Door County fish boil by the water and your dog can join you on the waterfront deck for live music and relaxing lake vibes.

End the day with a trip to a Door County winery like Simon Creek Vineyard and Winery in Jacksonport or Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery in Fish Creek. Both offer tours of the grounds and dog-friendly patios perfect for watching the sunset with family and friends.

Day 2: Natural Wonders & Sweet Treats

Begin your second day of Door County fun at Village Café in Egg Harbor for a hearty breakfast on a pup-friendly patio.

After filling up, it’s time for an adventure out on the water. Head north to Fish Creek to Door County Kayak Tours, where if the weather is calm, your dog can join you on an awe-inspiring tour through ancient sea caves and past shipwrecks.

Of course, no Door County vacation is complete without an ice cream stop. Not Licked Yet Frozen Custard in Fish Creek offers one better with creamy Wisconsin custard and free cones for dogs!

Top off your trip with an outdoor performance at Northern Sky Theater where your pup can enjoy an original musical and stay for the bonfire after. Or, see a movie at the Skyway Drive-In Theatre, one of the last drive-ins in the state.

Where to Stay for a Dog-Friendly Getaway

Country House Resort – Sister Bay

At Country House Resort in Sister Bay, dogs are welcomed with goody bags that include an all-natural treat, dog towels and a list of local canine hot spots. You and your pampered pup will love the surrounding green space that includes nature trails along a private shoreline.

Holiday Music Motel – Sturgeon Bay

The Holiday Music Motel makes for a one-of-a-kind stay with its 1950s retro decor and central location in Sturgeon Bay. Dog-friendly rooms are available, and your dog will have plenty to do in the area, like pick up some toys and treats from the Door County Dog Store down the street, which has its own in-house dog treat bakery!

Keep the fun going with a trip to these dog-friendly breweries in southeastern Wisconsin.
