Share

Whether you’re visiting to take in a Wisconsin Badgers game, explore the stunning State Capitol or stroll State Street, you won’t be short of fantastic places to have a meal in Madison. From fresh farm-to-table to classic pub fare, Madison’s food scene thrives on both innovation and tradition, and is a favorite among foodies looking to try new, creative dishes.

So, where exactly should you eat around here? We’ve picked out a few of the places that define the dining scene in Madison. Check them out!

Breakfast

Can’t Miss: Madison Sourdough

sourdough

Whether you want to start your morning with a fresh pastry or a full breakfast (or both), Madison Sourdough is a Madison must. This patisserie and restaurant mills around 40% of its flour using ingredients from local farmers and sells a variety of tasty breads from the cafe. Owner Andrew Hutchison was named a James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker in 2023, and you can taste his and his team’s handiwork in the wide selection of flavorful pastries that fill up the bakery case each morning.

Stop in for brunch dishes like the biscuit sandwich with rosemary honey, Croque Madame, mango chia pudding and more. The back dining room offers a view of the bakery, and in the summer, the front patio fills up quickly with locals and travelers alike. Located in the hip Willy Street neighborhood, this is the perfect spot to start your Madison adventure.

Hidden Gem: Bradbury's Coffee

While downtown Madison offers plenty of great breakfast options, Bradbury’s thoughtful, unique menu makes it stand out from the crowd. Just across from the Madison Children’s Museum, look for the corner building with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that let you and your crew watch the city go by while enjoying a meal together.

The name of the game here is top-notch coffee and made-to-order crepes. From buckwheat ham and cheddar to lemon curd with homemade whipped cream and seasonal specials, you’re sure to find something for everyone in your group to enjoy. Check out their large selection of coffee beans from around the world and take some of the deliciousness home with you.

Lunch

Can't Miss: Banzo

What began as a food cart run by two New York natives has quickly become one of Madison's most treasured eateries. At the center of Banzo’s menu is its made-from-scratch falafel and hummus served in either a fresh pita or bowl. One of the not-so-secret ingredients that elevates the pita version is the combination of chopped salad and potato chips inside.

Other authentic Mediterranean specialties on the menu include Shawarma, ground beef kebabs, babaganoush and baklava. Just across the street from Burrows Park, take your meal to go to enjoy a perfect sunset picnic overlooking Lake Mendota.

Hidden Gem: Bandit Tacos & Coffee

Located in the same restored train station as the award-winning Harvey House, this casual yet sophisticated spot takes its name from the painted locomotives that used to regularly travel through the depot.

Visit for breakfast, lunch or dinner for house-made corn tortillas filled with everything from coffee-rubbed pork shoulder and pickled melon to roasted local oyster mushrooms to smashed fried fingerling potatoes. Complement your meal with a horchata and espresso or a Door County Cherry Daiquiri. And don’t forget the fresh churros for dessert!

This James Beard-nominated restaurant showcases the best of Wisconsin’s bounty with produce-forward dishes and an impressive bar program. While the menu rotates with the seasons, you and your crew can always count on a killer Friday night fish fry, creative cocktails made with local spirits and scrumptious mocktails.

With plates meant to be shared and stylish vibes inside and out, Mint Mark has become one of Madison’s most well-known dinner destinations. Locals know you can also check out Superette, a bottle shop and bodega just down the hall that includes many of chef Sean Farr’s favorite goods.

Hidden Gem: Green Owl Cafe

Even meat lovers will be impressed by this vegetarian and vegan restaurant offering an extensive menu of reimagined classics. Green Owl, located in Madison’s hip Atwood neighborhood, cooks up plant-based bahn mi, Philly cheesesteaks, buffalo chicken wraps and more to satisfy everyone’s cravings. Check the weekly specials for seasonal treats and delicious vegan desserts.

Visit with friends to enjoy craft cocktails and a lively patio next to other Madison staples such as Alchemy Cafe and Gail Ambrosius Chocolatier.
