Wisconsin Golf Courses for Every Budget

Share

You don’t need to shell out the big bucks for a quality day on the green. These Wisconsin golf courses are all guaranteed to go easy on your wallet…though will make no promises on your score!

The Meadows of Sixmile Creek – Waunakee

This course artistically blends bentgrass greens, tees and fairways with more than 40 additional acres of natural habitat home to sandhill cranes, red fox, yellow winged blackbirds and a variety of egrets. In addition to the wildlife sightings, the superior drainage at The Meadows of Sixmile Creek allows for dry, comfortable conditions on days when most courses are just serving drinks.

Big Fish Golf Club – Hayward

Serious golfers might be surprised to find a Pete Dye designed golf course, Big Fish, about three miles outside of Hayward. Big Fish is classic Pete Dye - creative and challenging. But what it isn’t is expensive. Dye’s more famous work in Kohler can easily run into hundreds of dollars a round. A peak season 18 at Big Fish (with a cart) is under $70.

Brown County Golf Course – Oneida

When it opened in 1958, some golfers thought it was too tough. At about 6,800 yards, that’s not the case today, although this Lawrence Packard design through woods and over streams remains a strong test. Brown County has held many state-level events, including the State Open. A round at Brown County followed by a visit to nearby Lambeau Field – now that’s a day to remember.

Wild Ridge Golf Course – Eau Claire

An inland links-style course, Wild Ridge takes golfers on a wild ride through wetlands and up and over its namesake ridge on the back nine, where the wind and terrain can wreak havoc on your score. If you didn’t make enough birdies here, try the adjacent Mill Run course at this popular and affordable 36-hole complex.

Northwood Golf Club – Rhinelander

Judging by the name, you’d expect a lot of trees at Northwood. And you’d be right. A classic “Up North” course, it’s a walk on the wild side with tree-lined fairways, water hazards and abundant wildlife. Yet it’s a fair course, one you’ll enjoy escaping to time and again while on vacation.

The Apostle Highlands Golf Course – Bayfield

The Apostle Highlands Golf Course might not be the hardest course you will ever play, but it has some of the best views. Also a PGA Family Course, you can see Lake Superior on 13 of the holes (including the Apostle Islands in the distance) and water comes into play on eight of them. This is one round of golf where you’ll want to take a camera, take a seat occasionally, and appreciate the beauty of the Lake Superior shoreline.

Ranked Wisconsin’s top municipal course and designed by the renowned golf course architect Arthur Hills, this track is as challenging as it is beautiful.

Broadlands Golf Club – North Prairie

Broadlands Golf Cub has the look and feel of a links style course. However, with water coming into play on seven holes and many wooded tee and green areas, this course gives golfers of all skill levels an enjoyable variety. Devil’s Head Resort – Merrimac

Tucked away in Sauk County, you’ll find Devil’s Head Resort, which features two championship layouts: the Glacier and the Prairie Glen. The Glacier course is carved out of the glacier-formed Baraboo bluffs and takes golfers through a maze of elevation changes, narrow fairways, rock outcroppings and dazzling scenery. Meanwhile, the Prairie Glen course is a links style course featuring island greens, water holes and sand traps. But both courses offer a challenging and tranquil experience that makes the most out of the natural topography of the area.
