About John Muir Nature and History Route
The John Muir Nature and History Route uses the story of the renowned naturalist, often called the Father of our National Parks, to tell a broader story, that of early settler days in Marquette County as well as stories of the natural world. There are 22 sites in Marquette County on the route. Some sites are directly related to John Muir’s boyhood in Marquette County but other sites inform the visitor about historical events that would have been happening when John Muir lived here and when Marquette County was first being settled after Wisconsin statehood. Other sites will take visitors to places where landscapes, plants or animals can be seen that John Muir and other early settlers would have seen when they first moved to Marquette County. The route tells the story of settlement and the natural world.
