WI Lake Superior National Scenic Byway

Discover Wisconsin’s Lake Superior National Scenic Byway, a 70-mile route that follows the southern shoreline of Lake Superior along the Bayfield peninsula, showcasing the region's rich geological, historical, cultural, ecological, and recreational diversity.

This breathtaking route offers scenic views of forests, sandy beaches, and the sparkling blue waters of Lake Superior, along with landmarks like the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and the Gaylord Nelson Wilderness Area. Along the way, you'll find quaint harbor towns, historic fishing villages, small farms, and the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Reservation.

Experience the beauty of the Byway through its stories and stunning landscapes. Get out on the water with an Apostle Islands Cruise or kayak to the sea caves with a local outfitter. Explore art galleries, studios, and unique shops, and enjoy dining at one-of-a-kind restaurants. Catch a show at Big Top Chautauqua in the summer or their Backstage venue throughout the rest of the year.

Take a Ghost Walk or History Walk in Bayfield, and visit one of the many museums in the communities along the Byway. Don’t miss the orchards and berry farms surrounding Bayfield, where you can find local products and produce used by nearby breweries, cideries, distilleries, and wineries.

Hike the trail at Frog Bay Tribal National Park, with its beach views of the islands and dual-language signs that teach Ojibwe words along the way. Refill your water bottle with fresh artesian water at Thompson's West End Park in Washburn or the Cornucopia beach in the Town of Bell.

Before you leave, stop by a commercial fishery store in Bayfield, Red Cliff, Cornucopia, or Port Wing for fresh or smoked fish.
