About Lawrence University Main Hall
Main Hall at Lawrence University (1853) was the first building in Appleton to be entered in the National Register of Historic Places (1974) and is one of the few mid-Nineteenth-Century structures remaining. Rumored to have served as a station on the Underground Railroad, it also was the site of a memorial service following the assassination of President Lincoln. In 1911, William Howard Taft addressed students and townspeople from its front steps.
