About Caddie Woodlawn Park
In 1857, John Woodhouse and his wife, Harriet, uprooted their family from Boston and settled on 160 acres of land in Dunn County, Wisconsin. Among their five children was a spirited young girl named Caroline Augusta, whose frontier childhood would eventually inspire one of American literature's most beloved characters. Caroline's granddaughter, Carol Ryrie Brink, immortalized her in the classic novel Caddie Woodlawn, which earned the prestigious Newbery Medal for children's literature in 1935.
Today, the Caddie Woodlawn Historical Park honors that enduring legacy. Dedicated in 1970 by the Dunn County Historical Society, the park was brought to life through a community effort involving the county, local service clubs, and passionate individuals who relocated the original Woodhouse family home to the site. Visitors can explore the historic house and enjoy a covered picnic area, fresh water, and restrooms. The park is open during daylight hours from spring through fall and is located nine miles south of Menomonie on Highway 25.
