About Historic Point Basse - Wakely Historical Site
Experience the only living history site on the Wisconsin River! For thousands of years Native Americans had a trail that ran east to west across the state. They chose Point Basse as the the point the trail crossed the Wisconsin River. Point Basse is the French term for low point or "shallows." Robert Wakely’s settlement at Point Basse was the beginning of the navigable Wisconsin River. See the preserved 1850s site come to life with the restored Wakely house, trading post, blacksmith shop and schoolhouse.
