Historic Janesville Walking Tours

October 17, 2015

Join the Rock County Historical Society and the Janesville Historic Commission in presenting the 2015 Janesville Historic Walking Tours. Each tour is designed to showcase the unique personality and stories from Janesville’s distinct neighborhoods and downtown. Enjoy an 60-minute guided tour, learning about the people, places and heritage of each neighborhood. There are ten dates through summer and fall, featuring seven different tours. The Courthouse Hill District is Janesville's premier historic district of restored homes. These mansions show what life was like for Janesville's upper class in the latter half of the 19th century. This tour also includes stories of mystery and mayhem from Janesville's past. Other walks include Bostwick/Jefferson District, a neighborhood of period revival homes from the early 1900's, and the Look West neighborhood, homes from Janesville's first 100 years. A Fourth Ward tour shows a mix of homes from mansions to workers' cottages punctuated by two churches representing the Irish and Norwegian communities, while our Columbus Circle tour showcases one of Janesville's "pocket neighborhoods" where modest-sized period revival houses look inward toward tree-lined streets and small parks. The Main Street walk takes you through 150 years of Janesville's history, where we'll explore the great architecture along Main and Milwaukee Streets, and finally we have the West Milwaukee Street walk, which showcases a business district with several memorials and historic markers.
