7 Hidden Gem Supper Clubs in Wisconsin

Share

Enjoying a hearty meal and delicious drinks with friends in a cozy supper club is a classic Wisconsin experience. With around 250 of them in the state, however, it can be easy to miss out on some wonderful places if you’re not a local. That makes the discovery of charming small-town hideaways all the more fun, and each is big in personality and perfect for quality time with your favorite people. Head off the beaten path to explore these unforgettable supper clubs.

Black Otter Supper Club – Hortonville

Owners Bob and Geri Guyette were both employees at the Black Otter Supper Club in Hortonville when they married in 1998. Five years later, they bought the restaurant that meant so much to them. And now, under their loving leadership, the Black Otter continues to be a local favorite.

Visit the supper club west of Green Bay for a petite cut of tenderloin, or arrive ravenous to tackle a ten-pound slab of prime rib. If you can eat all of it yourself, you’ll be added to the Wall of Fame, but it also makes for a wonderful meal to share with friends and family. Whatever you order includes soup and salad bar and good times had by all at this quintessential Wisconsin supper club.

Owned by Robert “Wolfie” and his wife, Kathy, there’s a good chance you’ll see the couple and their two children, Ryan and Val, chatting with customers and making recommendations. Buck-A-Neer Supper Club – Stratford

What began as a blacksmith’s shop in the late 1800s is now a favorite spot for Friday Fish Fry, good company and all-you-can-eat steak in central Wisconsin. At the Buck-A-Neer Supper Club in Stratford, classic supper club fare reigns supreme — meaning delicious prime rib and seafood, starting with a hand-muddled Old Fashioned and ending with a towering ice cream drink. Newer favorites include deep-fried alligator bites and s’mores martinis. Be sure to get a group picture with the vintage neon “Buckaneer” sign out front to commemorate your Wisconsin night out.

Van Abel’s – Kaukauna

Just east of Appleton is a supper club whose dining made the map decades ago and still earns rave reviews. Van Abel’s opened in Kaukauna in 1848 as a saloon and rest stop for cattle-driving farmers en route to Green Bay. Now, a fourth generation of family members welcomes everyone from tables for two to wedding receptions for 500.

On the menu: time-honored recipes for bean salad, chicken booyah and country-style all-you-can-eat broasted chicken with all the classic sides. Start with an Old Fashioned or bloody mary; each comes in a 16-ounce canning jar. Other highlights include an on-site arcade and separate food allergy menus. Make Van Abel’s a stop on your route for a little history and a lot of good eating.
