Share

Door County might be one of Wisconsin’s most popular summer vacation spots. Between boat rides on the lake and the vast number of beaches and parks, it practically embodies the joy of summer. But many travelers aren’t aware of the magical winter wonderland the peninsula becomes each year. From lively festivals to luxurious spas and outdoor adventures, read on to discover why Door County is the perfect place for a snowy-season getaway.

Festivals, Food and Drink

The Fire & Ice Festival – Sturgeon Bay

During this annual festival, Sturgeon Bay transforms into a walking winter art gallery as artists carve magnificent sculptures of snow and ice. Pick up a map of all the art locations from the Sturgeon Bay Visitor’s Center and explore the charming town along the way. Tasty food and beverages take center stage in the evening at Stone Harbor Resort’s Fire and Ice Dinner and Dance. Tickets for this event sell out quickly, so be sure to purchase ahead of time!

The Waterfront Restaurant – Sister Bay

Great trips are often defined by great food enjoyed along the way. To that end, you’d be hard-pressed to find better pasta in all of Door County than the fresh, hand-rolled fare that The Waterfront specializes in. They also feature a seasonal menu that changes nightly and a view that is breathtaking year-round.

Fish Creek Winter Festival - Fish Creek

Have your kids ever seen a minnow race, taken a dog sled ride or watched ice kickball? If not, they’re in luck—Fish Creek’s Winter Festival features all of those and gives a thumbs-up to winter fun. Partake in outdoor activities, or escape the chill in a heated tent overlooking Green Bay and nosh on food and play wacky games (toilet seat toss, anyone?). Horse-drawn carriage rides add to the snow-covered fun.

Winter Rejuvenation

The Spa at Sacred Grounds – Ephraim

There are several excellent spas in Door County, but The Spa at Sacred Grounds offers a unique wellness experience that nourishes your mind and body. Start with one of their specialty treatments like the Detoxify and Rebalance Body Treatment which includes sauna time, an aromatic scrub and a detoxifying herbal massage. Afterward, reflect with a small-group yoga class or private meditation session.

The Blacksmith Inn on the Shore – Bailey’s Harbor

The recipe for true winter rejuvenation requires two essential ingredients: a fireplace and a warm, whirlpool tub. Every room at The Blacksmith features both, along with a private balcony and stunning harbor view. When you add in the continental breakfast, cherry oatmeal cookies and complimentary sleds and snowshoes, it’s easy to see why a stay at The Blacksmith Inn on the Shore makes for the perfect winter hideaway.
