Cheese Curds

No trip to Wisconsin is complete without sampling one of its most beloved culinary icons: cheese curds. These bite-sized gems are a favorite among locals and a must-try for anyone looking to experience the state’s award-winning cheese culture firsthand. Whether served fresh and squeaky or golden and deep-fried, cheese curds are a true Wisconsin delicacy—and a rite of passage for any foodie visiting Milwaukee.

Fried cheese curds are especially popular, boasting a crispy exterior and irresistibly gooey center. Served with a variety of dipping sauces, they’re the kind of snack that disappears fast—so don’t be surprised when someone suggests ordering another round. There are plenty of great places to try them and in Milwaukee a couple of standout options can be found at:

The Iron Horse Hotel

Just steps from the Harley-Davidson Museum in downtown Milwaukee, this hotel blends vintage charm with modern style—and their cheese curds are no exception. Head to Branded, the hotel’s bar and eatery, and order a basket of curds fried in a light, crisp tempura batter. They’re perfect for sharing, though after the first bite, you might want to keep them all to yourself.

Cafe Hollander

Originally created as a cozy neighborhood spot to gather, dine and drink, this Dutch-inspired café puts its own flavorful spin on a Wisconsin classic. Their hand-breaded cheese curds are made with local muenster cheese from Decatur Dairy and come with a side of sriracha ranch for a subtle kick. With four convenient locations throughout the Milwaukee area, planning a stop at Cafe Hollander is as easy as it is delicious.

Frozen Custard

If you haven’t eaten your way through Milwaukee’s frozen custard stands, you haven’t fully experienced Wisconsin. Often compared to ice cream, frozen custard is richer and creamier thanks to the addition of egg yolks, giving it a smooth, luxurious texture that’s perfect for savoring on a warm summer day.

Milwaukee proudly holds the title of the unofficial Frozen Custard Capital of the World, boasting more frozen custard stands than anywhere else on the planet. It’s not just a treat—it’s a tradition. Make memories with family and friends as you visit some of the city’s most iconic spots and indulge in one-of-a-kind flavors that make summer on the shores of Lake Michigan even sweeter.

Leon's Frozen Custard

Step back in time at Leon’s, a beloved 1940s-era drive-in that’s just as famous for its nostalgic charm as it is for its frozen custard. Open year-round, Leon’s serves up classic flavors in generous portions, alongside other frozen favorites that evoke simpler times. With its glowing neon sign and vintage vibes, this landmark is not only a must for your sweet tooth, it’s the perfect photo op for capturing your custard moment.

Kopp's Frozen Custard

Since 1950, Kopp’s has been a Milwaukee institution, known for its over-the-top burgers and irresistible custard. While you can always count on rich chocolate and smooth vanilla, the real magic lies in the Flavor of the Day—a rotating lineup that includes inventive creations like Red Raspberry, Piña Colada, and Mango Tango. With three convenient locations around the city, Kopp’s is a required stop for dessert lovers. Be sure to check their website for the latest flavor calendar—you won't want to miss a favorite!

Fish Fry

Few meals capture the heart of Wisconsin’s food culture quite like the Friday Fish Fry—a beloved ritual that’s been bringing families and communities together for generations. This quintessential Wisconsin meal features a variety of fish options like cod, perch, walleye, haddock or bluegill, all beer-battered and deep-fried to golden perfection.

Typically served with crispy fries, tangy coleslaw and classic accompaniments like lemon wedges, malt vinegar or tartar sauce, the fish fry is more than just a meal—it’s a cultural experience. While it’s most popular on Fridays, you’ll find spots serving it all week long. But to truly experience it the way locals do, head out on a Friday evening and join in the fun.

Lakefront Brewery

Nestled along the Milwaukee River, Lakefront Brewery offers one of the city’s most iconic Friday Fish Fries, complete with food, music and plenty of local charm. Starting at 4 p.m. every Friday, you can enjoy their famous fish fry while tapping your toes to live polka music from the Brewhaus Polka Kings. It’s a lively, family-friendly atmosphere where great food and great vibes go hand in hand. This event is a local favorite and fills up quickly, so reservations are strongly recommended to secure your spot at this festive Milwaukee tradition.

Old Fashioned Cocktail

There aren’t many states with such an adored state cocktail. Wisconsin’s Old Fashioned cocktail really sets the state apart. Every spot has their specialty – while some stick to the tried-and-true traditional masterpiece, many places infuse unique twists that will surprise your tastebuds. Typically adorned with an orange wedge and a cherry, this classic cocktail can be found at any supper club, restaurant or bar around Wisconsin. To truly put a Wisconsin spin on it, order with brandy (instead of whiskey) and toast to good company and time well spent together.

Buckatabon Tavern & Supper Club

Supper clubs are a classic Wisconsin tradition, and with over 250 of them all around the state chances are you are never too far away from being able to experience one for yourself. At these establishments you’ll find many Wisconsin staples like mouth-watering steaks, the Friday Fish Fry and of course plenty of Old Fashioned cocktails all served inside a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. Buckatabon Tavern and Supper Club in Wauwatosa serves up a delicious version of the Old Fashioned using locally made Buckatabon Brandy and is served sweet.
