Harvest Door County's Local Wineries During Your Getaway

Share

Although Door County is part of our wonderful state, the storied peninsula feels as if it’s a world away from the rest of Wisconsin. This slice of Cape Cod right in America’s Dairyland is home to charming harbor towns and magical landscapes to explore. Between the sandy dunes and crashing waves, you’ll discover plenty of getaway-worthy activities and eats to enjoy with your favorite people.

Also among the offerings here is an abundance of delicious wines. With a myriad of wineries found throughout the peninsula, it’s easy to craft a wine lover’s retreat. Make it a friends’ getaway to share with your fellow wine enthusiasts, or plan to spend some quality time romancing that special someone as you sip and savor local flavors.

Door Peninsula Winery

No matter who you’re journeying with, start your vino vacation by heading to Sturgeon Bay, home to Door Peninsula Winery. This is one of Door County’s many wineries that specializes in fruit wines with notes of local apples and cherries, known as the peninsula’s top crops. This winner of over 200 wine awards offers a range of fruity sips, from the decadent Chocolate Cherry Wine to the sweet Cranberry Apple. With two tasting bars at its charming 45-year-old location, it’s no wonder that this stop is a crowd-pleasing favorite.

Simon Creek Vineyard & Winery

Also in Sturgeon Bay and just a five-minute drive from Door Peninsula Winery, you’ll find Simon Creek Vineyard & Winery. With over 60,000 yearly visitors and a deck overlooking their stunning vineyard, you know that this winery is something special. To top it off, every single wine they make has clinched awards. Whether you’re planning an evening for two or a fun afternoon with friends, relish in their traditional wines, like Chardonnay or Hazelnut Port, or toast to your surroundings with a Door County Cherry wine.

Harbor Ridge Winery

After wrapping up your time in Sturgeon Bay, take a drive up Door County’s iconic Highway 42 to Egg Harbor’s Harbor Ridge Winery. Look for their charming log-cabin exterior and enjoy an entire afternoon with friends at this one-of-a-kind spot.

Tempt your tastebuds at the winery’s tasting bars, where you’ll sample award-winning sweet, semi-sweet and dry, barrel-aged wines. Don’t overlook flavors like Cherry Crush or Gimme One Good Riesling. Be sure to include the expansive gift shop, neighboring cheese store and regular live music to your itinerary for the full experience.

Also in Egg Harbor is the Door County Trolley that offers multiple wine tours—book one with your crew to sample sips at three of Door County’s most popular wineries, including Harbor Ridge!

Stone's Throw Winery

Less than 10 minutes from Harbor Ridge, make your way to Stone’s Throw Winery in Baileys Harbor. Made from California grapes and transformed here into delicious sips one barrel at a time, these wines boast an array of medals won in international wine competitions.

There’s plenty to do here during a bachelorette weekend or a date with your partner. Wander the sculpture garden and tour the barrel room where the magic happens. Eat at their restaurants, Vino! Vino!, a Tuscan wine and tapas bar, and Bocce, known for its oak barrel fired pizza. And then of course there’s the wine itself, including malbecs, merlots and cabernets.

Lautenbach's Orchard Country Winery & Market

Finally, end your grape-fueled pilgrimage in Fish Creek, home to Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery & Market. A treasure trove of wines, ciders and a whole lot more (baking mixes, dried cherries, jams and salsa, to name a few), your senses will be delighted as you visit the tasting room, relish sweet treats from the bakery and take in live music performances.

Between the 50 award-winning wines and hard ciders made on the premises, you and your group are sure to find something to love—Cherry Riesling or Honeycrisp Apple perhaps? The grounds also beckon with their intoxicatingly beautiful cherry blossoms that spring to life each May.

Still thirsty? Explore the Door County Wine Trail featuring nine distinct and delicious wineries on the pretty peninsula.
