Where to Try Ice Climbing in Wisconsin

Share

While Wisconsin offers many great places to rock climb in warmer weather, there are also opportunities to keep the fun going in winter. Read on to learn more about the extreme sport and where to try it for yourself in Wisconsin.

Ice Climbing in Wisconsin

While there are different categories of ice climbing, Wisconsin is predominately home to waterfall ice climbing. Waterfall ice forms when flowing water freezes into vertical or near-vertical formations, creating a stunning and challenging canvas for climbers. These routes can range from short, accessible climbs to more challenging adventures.

Ice Climbing for Beginners

If you love climbing and are looking to elevate your winter thrills, plan a guided adventure to start safely. The outfitter Vertical Illusions offers guided ice climbing tours at Governor Dodge State Park from January through March. Everyone from kids and beginners to ice climbing pros will enjoy scaling the frozen falls.

Want to test your skills before getting out on the ice? Milwaukee Turners is a climbing gym located on the lower level of the historic Turner Hall building and includes an ice climbing wall! While not coated in real ice, this is a great place to learn about the sport and build up strength.

Ice Climbing for Experienced Climbers

Also nestled within Wisconsin’s Driftless Region, Wyalusing State Park offers many varied ice climbing opportunities both in and around the property. The park’s star climbs, “Main Flow” and “Quarry Monster” challenge even seasoned climbers with purely vertical ice climbs, while the gullies and ravines of the park offer up less frequented and sometimes undocumented ice routes with less dramatic inclines.

Extend Your Ice Climbing Adventure

Turn your snowy outing into a winter getaway by staying overnight close to your ice climbing destination. Near Governor Dodge State Park, you can warm up at the Silver Star B&B, a log lodge surrounded by 70 acres of wilderness to explore. Closer to Wyaulsing State Park, Prairie du Chien’s Waterfront Hotel offers views of the Mississippi River and easy access to many of the city’s restaurants, shops and more.
