Day 1
Enjoy Autumn Wonder from Every Angle
Day one is your chance to see Wisconsin’s fall beauty unfold all around you. Follow the Great River Road as fiery bluffs rise above the Mississippi, climb to sweeping overlooks for a bird’s-eye view and get out on the water to watch colorful hillsides ripple across the river. With a National Scenic Byway tying it all together, every turn offers you and your crew a new perspective on autumn.
On the Water
Float Through a Sea of Fall Color on a La Crosse Queen Cruise
What better way to experience the magic of the Mississippi in fall than from the deck of a classic paddlewheel riverboat? Step aboard the La Crosse Queen and watch golden bluffs pass you by. This modern-day replica of the grand riverboats that once traveled the Mississippi offers sightseeing cruises through late October. Settle in, breathe in the crisp autumn air and enjoy the view together.
Restaurants
Pull Up a Chair & Dig into Delicious Plates at 4 Sisters
Once you’re back on land, it’s only a few steps to get to 4 Sisters Wine Bar & Tapas for a lunch perfect for sharing. Choose from grilled cheese dippers, walleye cakes, avocado blackened shrimp and more delectable dishes to fuel the rest of the day’s adventures.
State Parks & Forests
Take A Breathtaking Trek at Perrot State Park
Head north with your crew on the Great River Road, a national scenic byway that parallels the Mississippi River for over 250 miles. If the drive to Perrot State Park isn’t stunning enough, ambitious hikers can take to the river bluffs, where trails are cloaked in a medley of golds, oranges and reds. Make it to the top of Brady’s Bluff for panoramic views of the Mississippi and to spot dozens of species of birds passing through the migratory flyway.
Unique Stays
Find Your Riverfront Escape at Trempealeau Hotel
Step back in time at the historic Trempealeau Hotel, a lovingly restored 1871 landmark where cozy European-style rooms, Jacuzzi suites and laid-back riverfront charm will make it hard to leave. Head to the sun deck for sweeping views of the Mississippi River alight with autumn hues then settle into the beer garden and catch live music. Don’t miss the restaurant’s famous vegetarian walnut burger, so beloved it’s now sold in stores and restaurants throughout the Midwest.
Day 2
Discover Cabins & Castles Drenched in Fall Color
Today is all about slowing down and enjoying time together surrounded by the season’s splendor. You and your group will soak up vibrant vistas, dig into storied history, taste freshly harvested flavors and unwind together in a magical treehouse.
Parks & Wildlife Areas
Discover Alma’s Swans & Small-Town Charm at Rieck’s Lake Park
After starting your day with a coffee and pastry from The Down-Leau, hop back on the Great River Road and continue north towards the delightful town of Alma. Nestled between the shimmering Mississippi River and soaring 500-foot limestone bluffs, this historic town stretches seven miles long and just two blocks wide, with beautifully restored buildings around every turn. Be sure to stop at Rieck’s Lake Park for a majestic view of the river and the chance to glimpse Tundra Swans passing through on their annual migration.
Museums & History
Experience the Story Behind the Books at Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum
Just 15 miles north of Alma, Pepin invites you to step into the world that inspired Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved Little House books. Walk through a replica of her childhood log cabin, explore the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum and imagine life along the Mississippi more than a century ago.
Wineries & Cideries
Drink in the Beauty of Fall at Villa Bellezza
Spend sunset surrounded by the glowing beauty of Wisconsin’s fall countryside at the castle-like Villa Bellezza Winery, where rolling vineyards and brilliant autumn color set the scene for a relaxing wine tasting. Sip varieties like the Tavola Red, a light-bodied blend of St. Croix and Marquette grapes with aromas of currant and dried fruit, a fruity flavor with a hint of spice.
Unique Stays
Take Your Fall Getaway to New Heights in the Pepin Forest Treehouse
End your day with a truly extraordinary stay in a real-life treehouse! Just minutes from town, you and your crew can wander the river-bluff trails and then unwind in a hot tub or cedar sauna, cozy up and read in the stair nook or gather around in the outdoor firepit under the stars.
Day 3
Cap Off Your Scenic Journey with Delicious Tastes and Toasts
The last day of your adventure is for strolling enchanting small towns, savoring classic seasonal treats like pecan pie and apple cider and one more show-stopping river overlook to bring it all home.
Sweets & Treats
Sink Your Fork into Fall at Stockholm Pie and General Store
It’s a short jaunt from Alma to Stockholm, where the award-winning Stockholm Pie & General Store is a must-stop. Named “Best Pie Shop in America” by USA TODAY two years in a row, this cozy shop serves up irresistible seasonal flavors, including pumpkin pecan and cranberry nut.
Shopping
Explore Eclectic Shops Like the Purple Turtle Artisan Collective
Although its population is less than 100 people, Stockholm boasts an impressive Main Street of original art galleries and culinary attractions. Spend some time wandering in and out of shops like Northern Oak Amish Furniture & Gifts, Scandihoo and the Purple Turtle Artisan Collective.
State Parks & Natural Areas
See the Mississippi in Its Autumn Glory at Maiden Rock Bluff
Fit in one last kaleidoscopic view on your trip at Maiden Rock Bluff State Natural Area, where a 400-foot-high bluff rises above Lake Pepin and the Mississippi River. Take in the sweeping autumn scenery, watch the river shimmer below and keep an eye out for nesting peregrine falcons — this is one of just six bluffs along the Mississippi where these remarkable birds successfully nest.
Wineries & Cideries
Toast to Crisp Days & Color at Maiden Rock Cidery & Orchard
Top off your trip with a tasty stop at Maiden Rock Cidery & Orchard. You’ll find small-batch, artisanal cider, crafted with skill and passion. Spend the afternoon picking your own apples and bring some cider (and wine) home to remember your trip.
