The waters below the Shawano dam churning with hundreds of large fish. Some as large as seven feet long and 200+ pounds. Often mistaken for sharks or dolphins, they are actually Lake Sturgeon—a species dating back to prehistoric times. Each spring when water temperatures are just right, sturgeon move up the Wolf and Embarrass rivers from the Lake Winnebago system to spawn, one of the only places in North America to see this large of sturgeon spawning number in one location.
The Wolf River tumbles dramatically through the wilderness of the Menominee Indian Reservation. Hidden between Lily and Smoky Falls is one of the premier whitewater rafting and kayaking experiences in the Midwest. This fun filled stretch features a number of class 3 and 4 rapids including the ruggedly scenic “Dells Gorge.” This spectacular gem has been designated as a Wild and Scenic River.
Everywhere you travel you will see colorful art adorning buildings, barns, and businesses. Nearly 200 barn quilts bedeck traditional barns throughout the county.
