On the northwest shore of Lake Winnebago, Appleton is the largest city in an urban area known as the Fox Cities. The Fox Cities area includes eighteen communities along the Fox River and Lake Winnebago that boomed in the early 20th century producing paper products. Today the Fox Cities are known as Wisconsin’s Shopping Place. A large regional mall and many galleries, antique and specialty shops offer plenty of shopping options.
Appleton is the cultural heart of the Fox Cities and is home to a spectacular performing arts center. Discover museums focusing on favorite son Harry Houdini, the paper industry, and one of the largest children’s museums in the Midwest. The elegant Hearthstone Historic House offers a tour of the past. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, a Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, and Kaukauna’s Wisconsin International Raceway provide plenty of sports entertainment.
Don't leave without tasting…
The chocolate cheese at Simon’s Cheese Store. Simon’s offers a dizzying variety of traditional and specialty cheeses, all made in Wisconsin, but the chocolate cheese is truly something not to be missed.
Explore your creative side...
Make paper at the Paper Discovery Center, fuse glass at the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum, or catch a performance of one of our many local groups like the Fox Valley Symphony, White Heron Chorale and Attic Theater.
Take a walking tour of the “paper baron” mansions lining Wisconsin Avenue in Neenah. At the turn of the last century, Neenah was home to more millionaires than any town west of Providence, Rhode Island. Many of these homes are located on Kimberly Point on the shores of Lake Winnebago. A walk around the point and through beautiful Riverside Park will take you to the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum, a glass museum with one of the most extensive collections of paperweights in the world.
Want to stay up late?
Head to downtown Appleton where the vibe is cool and sophisticated. Enjoy dinner at exceptional restaurants, catch a show at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center or live local entertainment at one of several nightclubs.
Your child will always remember...
Performing Houdini’s “metamorphosis” and putting on a magic show for you in the A.K.A. Houdini exhibit at The History Museum at the Castle.
