The Wisconsin State Capitol has been at the heart of the state's story for nearly two centuries. Wisconsin's first territorial lawmakers met in a simple wooden building in Belmont in 1836 before choosing Madison as the permanent capital. Construction on the city's first Capitol began the following year using locally quarried stone from Maple Bluff and sturdy oak from nearby forests. 

After a fire destroyed much of the previous Capitol in 1904, the magnificent Neoclassical building you see today rose in its place and opened in 1917. Topped by the gleaming gold statue named “Wisconsin” and soaring 284 feet above the city, it remains Madison's tallest building—a distinction protected by state law. Today, visitors can admire not only its remarkable architecture but also the history and craftsmanship that have made it one of Wisconsin's most iconic landmarks.

Fun Facts You Didn’t Know About the Capitol

Keep an eye on the Capitol's crown. Perched atop the dome is “Wisconsin,” a 15-foot, 5-inch gilded statue weighing more than three tons. She holds a globe and an eagle while wearing a badger on her head, proudly representing the state's "Forward" motto.

• Earth Day has Madison roots. Before founding Earth Day, Governor Gaylord Nelson launched the Capitol's first tourism information booth in the rotunda in 1959, helping visitors discover everything Wisconsin has to offer.
• It's nationally recognized. The Wisconsin State Capitol earned National Historic Landmark status in 2001, honoring its remarkable architecture and lasting place in the state's history.
• The dome is truly one of a kind. The Capitol is home to the world's only granite dome and the largest granite dome by volume in the United States, making it one of Madison's most recognizable landmarks.
