Located at the convergence of three beautiful rivers and on the shores of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee offers plenty of waterfront fun. Milwaukee, the largest city in Wisconsin, is home to numerous outstanding waterfront restaurants, museums and cruises. Spend an afternoon sailing around the lakefront, grab dinner on the water or lose yourself in the outstanding museums located in Milwaukee.
Milwaukee Museums on Lake Michigan
There is certainly no shortage of places to see, or things to do in this urban oasis. If you’re looking for top-notch museums, Milwaukee has got you covered. Spend some time wandering around the Milwaukee Art Museum, known all around the world for the Burke Brise Soleil, the 217 foot long “wings” that open and close daily with the building. Looking for something to do with the kids? Try next door: Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin; an interactive museum and home to a 137 foot replica of a 19th century Great Lakes schooner. The two museums are situated right on the banks of Lake Michigan, making for breathtaking views from both.
Waterfront Dining in Milwaukee
Milwaukee is home to restaurant after delicious restaurant. If you’re looking for a prime waterfront dining experience, look no farther than Lake Michigan and the Milwaukee River.
Alterra on the Lake is a Milwaukee classic, situated in a refurbished 1888 Milwaukee River Flushing Station. Located just across from the marina, they’ve got a great selection of deli and café type fare, and a fantastic outdoor terrace. Sip an iced coffee and watch the world go by.

This Parisian style restaurant is nestled on a bluff in pristine Lake Park, overlooking Lake Michigan. All with world-class food, that is sure to please even the most critical connoisseur.
If you’re looking for something hip, chic, and delicious give Water Buffalo a try. This restaurant and bar is located on the Milwaukee River, in the ultra stylish Third Ward neighborhood. Travel Milwaukee by Water

Rent a paddle boat at the Veteran’s Park Lagoon and take in great views of Milwaukee’s tallest buildings. Hoping for something a little more spacious? Contact Sea Dog Sailing to make reservations for a tour of Milwaukee’s lakeshore on a 38 foot yacht. For those hoping to just roll down the river, there are several options for you: The Milwaukee Boat Line cruises, the famed Edelweiss dinner cruise or the after-work Margarita Fiesta Cruise. All of these voyages offer fantastic views of Milwaukee’s urban landscapes.
If you’d like to take a more hands-on approach to Lake Michigan, and feel like jumping into its cool fresh water, head to Bradford Beach. Located just north of downtown Milwaukee, this rejuvenated beach was awarded the National Clean Beaches “Blue Wave” certification in 2009.
