Wisconsin’s Christmas Theater: 7 Seasonal Shows

Maybe you’ve already started shopping, visualized how you’re going to deck the halls or at least taken a peek at your Christmas music playlist from last year. But if you’re dreading winter too much to be excited about the holidays, we have just the (indoors) thing to amp up your cheer.

Name a holiday performing arts classic, and it’s probably coming to Wisconsin this year. Here are a handful of our favorites playing throughout the state this month – some old and a few new!

Miracle on 34th Street - The MusicalFireside Dinner Theatre, Fort Atkinson

“Miracle on 34th Street the Musical” is a new take on the classic Christmas tale by Valentine Davis that’s sure to please the entire audience. With big brassy Broadway music and a heartfelt story, this performance is an unforgettable spin on a holiday classic. 

A Christmas CarolState Theatre, Eau Claire

Travel along on Ebenezer Scrooge’s transformative journey from “Bah! Humbug!” to “Happy Christmas” with the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. Presented by the Chippewa Valley Theatre Guild, “A Christmas Carol” invites guests to reflect upon the true meaning of the holiday season. 

It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio PlaySt. Croix Festival Theatre, St. Croix Falls 

Prepare for a delightful twist on an American classic with this live radio play version of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Adapted from Frank Capra’s beloved holiday film, this performance put on by a small ensemble brings the sights, sounds and characters to life right in front of the audience’s eyes. 

The NutcrackerFox Cities Performing Arts Center, Appleton

Enjoy Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Ballet” performed by the Makaroff Youth Ballet. Soak in the performance of local dancers as they tell the story of this beloved holiday tale. Live music for the show will be performed by the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Appleton Boy Choir. 

Christmas at the PalacePalace Theater, Wisconsin Dells

Put the entire family in the holiday spirit with “Christmas at the Palace.” This original musical, styled after New York City Christmas Spectacular, features traditional and contemporary holiday favorites from around the world. The show also features the only live nativity on stage in the Midwest. 

The Altenburgh Christmas ExtravaganzaGrand Theater, Wausau

Put the entire family in the holiday spirit with “Christmas at the Palace.” This original musical, styled after New York City Christmas Spectacular, features traditional and contemporary holiday favorites from around the world. The show also features the only live nativity on stage in the Midwest. 

Play it Forward for the HolidaysDoor Community Auditorium, Fish Creek

Play it Forward is an annual concert at the Door Community Auditorium that brings together some of Door County’s most loved musicians for an evening of seasonal music. Surround yourself with holiday cheer at this festive event, with proceeds from the evening benefitting charity.
