Sugar River State Trail

  • Open
  • Trail: Recreational
  • Surface: Crushed Stone
Trail Description

The Sugar River State Trail follows an abandoned railroad line in south-central Wisconsin for 24 miles from New Glarus to Brodhead. A short access trail connects the Sugar River State Trail to New Glarus Woods State Park. Fourteen trestle bridges cross over the Sugar River and its tributaries, while the trail passes by farmlands, woods, rolling hills, and remnant prairies. The trail has also been designated as a National Recreational Trail. A state trail pass is required to bike the trail and may be purchased at New Glarus Chamber of Commerce (old depot at trailhead) or the Broadhead Police Department. This trail passes through rural communities every ten miles or so, each with convenience stores and places to grab a quick bite to eat or a refreshing beverage. Trailheads with parking can be found in New Glarus, Monticello, Albany, and Broadhead Restroom facilities are available at each of those trailheads (note that as of 6/2 the rest room in Albany was closed, but water is available at the fountain). See the Images below for a trail map.

Condition Description

Condition descriptions for this trail are currently informed by the DNR Property Condition Notices map. When no alerts are active, trails are rated in fair condition. Throughout the season, please use caution after weather events and consider refraining from using the trail if leaving ruts in the surface, as deep footprints and bike tire ruts can impact the long-term smoothness of the trail.
