Badger State Trail - Green County

Trail Description

The 40-mile trail travels from Madison to the Illinois border connecting several communities as well as the Capital City Trail, the Sugar River State Trail, and the Jane Addams Trail (IL). The trail is paved from Purcell Road north to Madison and a combination of dirt and crushed limestone from Purcell Road south to the Illinois border. A state trail pass is required for bicycling and in-line skating and can be purchased at Belleville Public Library and Bike Haus or Stonehall Bicycle in Monroe. This section of the trail has three trailheads. To the north, the Green county line passes through Belleville and is the listed trailhead below. Also, trailheads in Monticello (42.7422244,-89.5790053) and Monroe (42.6046798,-89.6422074). This trail passes through rural communities every ten miles or so, each with convenience stores and places to grab a quick bite to eat or a refreshing beverage. A trailside restroom with running water and picnic tables is located in Monroe (note: this facility is open seasonally). Condition Description

Stewart Tunnel on the Badger Trail is closed due to safety concerns. Trail users can use Tunnel Road to detour around the closure. See the Location Photos below for a map of the detour.
