Road Biking

Road and Multi-Use Bike Trails

Whether you’re looking for a leisurely ride, a scenic path for the family, or a bikepacking route, explore Wisconsin’s recreational trails and roads. With both rural and urban routes, our multi-use trails bring at-your-own-pace adventure and create stories you’ll be telling again and again.

Thousands of Miles of Trails

There are more trails, roads and natural beauty to discover in Wisconsin than you think.

The proof is in the numbers: 44 State Trails covering over 1,700 miles. Over 100 rail-trails spanning nearly 2,000 miles, including the first railroad-converted trail in the country that takes you through historic tunnels and five communities. The CAMBA trails, designated Bronze by the International Mountain Biking Association, include more than 200 miles of mapped gravel routes, many along low-trafficked forest roads in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

Wisconsin is Biking Paradise

Thanks to Wisconsin’s early and strong dairy industry, paved roads through the rolling hillsides of the state’s rural areas are perfect — and beautiful — for bike touring. Add in our 20+ Bicycle Friendly Communities, including Madison which is 1 of only 5 Platinum-designations in the country, and you have some of the best memories ready to be made on two wheels.

Head to Sparta, the “Bicycling Capital of America,” for access to the Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the La Crosse River State Trail. And the Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail is a fully paved 52-plus-mile National Recreation Trail winding through Wisconsin’s Northwoods, connecting to a myriad of other trails, including the popular purpose-built WinMan Trails.

For the extra-adventurous, tackle the 269-mile US Bike Route 30/230. It takes you across the entire state, from the shore of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee to the banks of the Mississippi River just north of La Crosse using multiple existing trails and designated bike routes.
