In Wisconsin, Booyah is more than an expression accompanying a celebratory fist pump – it's a stick-to-your-ribs stew of Belgian origin that's been steeped in tradition for generations. If you're not familiar with this specialty dish, that's probably because – for the most part – you can only find it in the northeastern part of the state.
Booyah can take up to two days and multiple cooks to prepare, so it's often cooked in 10-, 20- or even 50- gallon batches. Vegetables are mixed into massive steel kettles along with a thick broth, meat and a unique blend of seasonings that differs among chefs. This is comfort food at its finest!
Because booyah requires such laborious preparation, it's most commonly found at large events such as fairs and church picnics. However, a few establishments in Green Bay, Bellevue and Brussels have dedicated enough manpower to bring this legendary dish to the masses. If you're ever in the area, don't miss an opportunity to try Wisconsin's legendary booyah!
The Booyah Shed – Green Bay
This mobile restaurant usually can be found at the local farmers market and other events in the area. While The Booyah Shed serves up delicious burgers and steak sandwiches, its namesake is the true star of the show – there's even a separate line for the dish! Insider tip: Don't forget to hit the ATM before you get here; this food truck is cash only!
The Rite Place – Bellevue
This family owned and operated restaurant has been open since 1977 – meaning they've had plenty of time to perfect their own delicious booyah recipe. The Rite Place welcomes booyah lovers for both lunch and dinner and even offers carry-out for those who prefer to enjoy their booyah at home.
Zesty's Frozen Custard and Grill – Multiple Green Bay area locations
Zesty's has long been known for their frozen custard, a local favorite since the 1980s, but there is more to the menu than creamy treats! Fresh chicken booyah is available daily at each of Zesty's three Green Bay area locations. Add a cup on the side, or order a full bowl to make it a meal in itself. Either way, we're sure you'll leave satisfied!
Brussels Countryside Diner – Brussels
Brussels Countryside Diner has a reputation for delicious food, great value and monster-sized portions – it's pretty much impossible to leave this place without a full stomach! Thick and hearty booyah is prepared with the greatest of care, and is served up fresh each and every day!
