Lake Superior Shoreline
To the north, Wisconsin is bordered by the largest of the five Great Lakes, Lake Superior. A region rich with history, natural beauty and spirited adventure, Wisconsin’s Lake Superior Shoreline is a must-explore.
From a kayak on the water or from the trails on the cliffs above, the Apostle Islands are sure to take your breath away. Designated as a National Lakeshore, naturally occurring rock arches and sea caves dot the island shores. Seeing it is an experience you and your family will be talking about for years to come.
For a proper island getaway, gather the friends and catch the ferry to Madeline Island. Walk along sandy beaches and the 1-mile boardwalk at Big Bay State Park. Then after a day of island adventuring together, dance to live music, drink in hand, at Tom’s Burned Down Cafe before the ferry ride back to the mainland. Or stay the night at the Inn On Madeline Island, waking up to Superior views.
Back on the Mainland
Experience the history of the Lake Superior Shoreline in the region’s immersive museums. In the city of Superior, tour the Fairlawn Mansion — a castle-like Victorian mansion open for tours that transport you back to the late 1800s. The SS Meteor Maritime Museum brings you aboard a cargo ship from the same era. You’ll see what life was like on a cargo ship over a century ago, and the kids’ imaginations will be filled with waves of Lake Superior.
A stay in Ashland is easily filled with things to do and quality time together, starting with the expansive view from the observation tower at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. Or stay in Washburn at Bodin’s Resort. From any of the cabins, you can take in the lakeview or head down to the water for sailing canoeing, fishing or swimming off the dock.
Leave the kids behind and escape from stress at Wild Rice Retreat, tucked away in the woods outside of Bayfield. Spend days together enjoying group outdoor yoga classes, art classes and other mindfulness activities. You’ll head back home feeling refreshed and energized.
However you explore Wisconsin’s Lake Superior Shoreline, it’s sure to be an unforgettable trip.
